I know this sounds very simple but this system would actually have a lot of depth because you would be able to link any linkable blocks.
You link the 2 and then boom, you got your mechanism.
Hytale redstone Activator#
The system would work like this: you place an activator down and then a machine block. Detector blocks(observers) would be the only block that would be both an activator and machine block. Machine blocks would be things like pistons and dispensers. Activators would be things like buttons, levers, tripwires, targets, and keyholes. With this type of 'redstone' system, there would two type of blocks that you could link. I think there could be a late game magic item that allows for blocks to be linked wirelessly. At least I would like to see it on a future update, or even a mod. I don't know if the developers will invest so much time on creating such a complicated thing.

In the case of the mod Create, not only I never looked for a video explaining how to build certain things, I started experimenting because of how the mod is built with logic and mechanic concepts, it incentives the player to experiment. If I ever had the intention to build something with redstone, I'd just look for a video on YouTube, and that's it, deleting the process of creating the machine for yourself and therefore eliminating the sense accomplishment you get when finishing it. Not only is it not explained at all, but it's highly confusing, and many things don't even make sense at all, due to the whole system being bugged. Because that's the thing I hated the most about redstone. Well, I would like for Hytale to have this kind of system, based around logic concepts that can be applied to real life.
It includes dozens of things to do that you could never even think of doing on vanilla Minecraft. The mod is called Create and I can't even express how amazing this mod is. There's actually a mod, one of best mods I've ever seen on MC, that "replaces" redstone with gears and clockwork materials. First of all, the system must be easy to learn anf logic based (not being half bugged would help a lot).
